Opinion: Enyimba’s history gives them a chance

Football is a beautiful game, perhaps because it is like biscuits that you never know where it will make a crack.

It is never easy for one to predict the outcome of a football match, because the unpredictability of the beautiful game makes it truly unpredictable.

The People’s Elephant, Enyimba Football Club, might have lost their CAF Champions league first round first leg match against Al Merrikh SC of Sudan in Ondurman by a heavy 0-3 margin, the truth is that Enyimba FC only lost out in the battle, not the war.

Let me remind everyone that Enyimba FC have walked this path before and have encountered success previously.

During the 2010 CAF Confederations Cup first round first leg game away to Angolan outfit, Academica Do Soyo in Angola, Enyimba lost 2-0 and many thought it was over until the second leg in Aba when Enyimba turned the table by beating Academica Do Soyo 3-0.

In the Second round of the competition that same year, Enyimba were up against AS Vita of DR Congo, in the first leg in Kinshasa and were beaten 3-0. To many that was the end of the road, especially considering the experience of AS Vita. They were however shocked in the second leg in Aba, with Enyimba overturning the result by winning 3-0 and going on to advance on penalties.

Enyimba can also draw inspiration from the great Enugu Rangers team of the 1975 CAF Champions Cup, who lost 3-0 to El Mahella of Egypt only to win the second leg 4-0 in Enugu – a match that has gone down in the history of Nigerian Football as “The Day Mahella Saw Wahala”.

It is therefore time for everyone – players, coaches and fans – to align in resolve and get the acts right because there might be a “Miracle Of Aba”.

Go On Enyimba! Go On The People’s Elephant! Go On The Pride of Nigeria! You have Done It Before, You Can Do It Again.
