Enyimba fight past Rangers in epic thriller
Victor Mbaoma sustained his scoring form as Enyimba returned to winning course with 2-1 win against Rangers at the Enyimba Stadium on Wednesday evening.
In need of a response after a disappointing loss against Katsina United on Sunday, Enyimba took little time to make a statement, Mbaoma putting the hosts in front in the third minute; and although Israel Abia’s sixth minute equaliser punctuated their flow, Cyril Olisema fired a stunning goal to reinstate the lead before the break.
Starting his fifth on the bounce, Mbaoma scored his fourth goal during that period when he tapped in from close range after a marvelous piece of dribble from Anayo Iwuala.
The dust never settled down on the celebrations, though as Rangers drew level three minutes later Israel Abia benefiting from a goalkeeping spill to tap into an empty net.
The hosts showed desire and reacted to Rangers’ low block by controlling opposition territory; and Seidu Mutawakilu required a double save to stop Dare Olatunji’s pop.
Cyril Olisema restored Enyimba’s lead just after the half hour with an unstoppable volley that went through the hands of Mutawakilu into the roof.
Uche John missed a close range header while Tope Olusesi missed by inches as Rangers pressed for parity after the restart.
Enyimba however regained control and Mutawakilu was again at his best to deny Austin Oladapo and Reuben Bala in the closing stages.
The win has brought Fatai Osho’s side within six points of the top of the standings, but the People’s Elephant will look to better their placement when they host Nasarawa United on Sunday.
