COACH YEMA HAILS SUPERB ENYIMBA SHOW IN SPORTING LAGOS WIN

Assistant Coach Yemi Olanrewaju has hailed Enyimba’s performance in their 2-0 win against Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) new boys Sporting Lagos in Aba on Sunday.

Midfielders Eze Ekwutoziam and Elijah Akanni netted either side of half time to hand the NPFL champions a deserved win, in a game the People’s Elephant dominated and could have scored more goals.

Fondly known as Coach Yema, the gaffer was pleased his side executed his game plan perfectly, and neutralized the threats of the Lagos-based outfit.

Taking charge of the first team in the absence of Head Coach Finidi George, who is on international duty with the Super Eagles, Yema voiced his excitement at the win and goals despite missing top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma to injury.

“It was a good win, we had a plan,” the former MFM and Vandrezzer FC assistant coach said.

“We knew that they were not going to survive us.Truly, if we play to our potential I don’t think any team (in the NPFL) can survive us.

“I have a good knowledge of this team (Sporting Lagos), and that was why our game plan was different. The intensity today (Sunday) was so much. I knew that if we stop them from building from the back and close down their dangerous forward Jonathan Alukwu, nothing was going to work for them.

“And you could see that in the first half they did not have a shot at goal, we squeezed them. That was what I asked the boys to do and they played to instruction.

“The game was good. We could have finished it off in the first half, but it is what it is. We are getting better every day. At least, we scored two goals today – the last time we did that at home was against Bendel Insurance in November last year.

He added: “So, scoring two today (Sunday) is a wonderful stuff despite all the injuries. Our highest goalscorer Chijioke Mbaoma is out with injury.”

With the win, the record-NPFL champions are now placed 4th on the log, with 29 points from 15 matches (still with two outstanding games).
