Enyimba overpower Sporting Lagos to begin 2024 on a high
Eze Ekwutoziam and Elijah Akanni were on target as Enyimba beat Sporting Lagos 2-0 at the Enyimba Stadium on Sunday evening in their first outing of the new year.
The hosts put their feet firmly on the gas from the offset with Somiari Alalibo, Eze Ekwutoziam and Ekene Awazie peppering the opponents goal with audacious attempts, but Nathaniel Asibe stood his ground in goal to prevent Sporting from trailing in the early stages.
Enyimba’s in-form man, Ekwutoziam however got the opener just after the half hour, converting from the spot after Chibueze Izuogu’s strike was handled inside the box.
The lively Ekwutoziam almost got another shortly after but his strike bounced off the upright, while Eriugo Adiele and Joseph Atule misfired from close range as the People’s Elephant ended the first half strongly.
Uwana Asuquo’s strike from the edge of the box was tipped onto the crossbar, while Atule was denied by the goalkeeper, but the People’s Elephant still found a way to seal the result in style in added time as Elijah Akanni finished off a delightful team move which included two other substitutes, Gordon Kusi and Chibuike Nwaiwu.
