Deutsch defiant! Enyimba boss backs team to stay up

Head Coach Emmanuel Deutsch has declared that Enyimba will not be relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL) despite their recent struggles in the Nigeria Premier Football league (NPFL).

Sunday’s 0-2 loss to Kano Pillars saw the People’s Elephant drop to 16th on the standings, with only goal difference separating the record 9-time league winners from the drop zone.

That defeat was Enyimba’s 13th of the campaign in what has been an underwhelming season for the 2-time African champions.

Speaking after the loss to fellow strugglers Pillars, the former Abia Warriors gaffer expressed disappointment with the outcome but maintained that Enyimba will surely escape the drop.

“It was a tough match,” he noted. “We played against a dangerous team, because both of us are in the danger zone.

“I think the home team has a reason to win their match. We are both in the relegation zone – in a very dangerous zone. They have the advantage and they won the match. There’s nothing to argue about.

On helping the club avoid relegation, he said: “The plan is for Enyimba to maintain their place in the NPFL. I’m very optimistic about it.”

Enyimba will next face neighbours Abia Warriors in Aba on Sunday in a must-win Abia Derby, as the People’s Elephant continues the battle for survival.
