Obot, Obioma’s strikes lift Enyimba over Plateau United hurdle
Enyimba recorded an important 2-1 win against Plateau United on Sunday to put paid to a turbulent run and return to contention in group A.
The People’s Elephant were winless in three matches, managing only two points from those games, but Imo Obot’s low freekick and Emeka Obioma’s second half strike put the game beyond the visitors who pulled one back in the latter stages.
The game was halted after just seven minutes as play was hindered by a heavy downpour, but Enyimba bit hard on resumption with Chibuike Nwaiwu threatening with a ding that was expertly kept out by Chinedu Anozie.
The opener arrived ten minutes before the interval when Obot struck home a low freekick from the edge of the box.
Adiele Eriugo had the chance to double it before the break when Sadiq Abubakar laid a pass his way, but his strike went straight into the hands of Anozie.
Obioma established Enyimba’s control eight minutes after the restart, receiving Ini Edem’s cross on his chest before finding the bottom corner with a precise strike.
The visitors hauled themselves back into the contest when Chimezie capitalised on a defensive howler to half the deficit, but after a period of scare, the hosts regained control to see off one of Group A’s biggest fixtures.
