“TOO BIG TO GO DOWN” – EZEKIEL BACKS ENYIMBA TO FINISH STRONG

Edidiong Ezekiel says Enyimba needs to ‘believe’ they can end the season on a strong note, as the record 9-time Nigerian champions continue the battle for survival in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Sunday’s victory over neighbours Abia Warriors moved the People’s Elephant to 15th on the NPFL standings, with 39 points from 32 matches, just two points outside the dreaded relegation zone, in what has been a turbulent campaign for the club.

With six matches left in the season, Ezekiel, however, believes if Enyimba win their remaining home games and pick points on the road, they’ll avoid being relegated for the first time in nearly 40 years.

“Obviously, what we need now as a club is to believe; we have to believe that we will get out of the drop zone,” he said. “How? By winning all our remaining home games while we try to pick something away from home.

“How confident am I? Enyimba is inarguably the biggest team in Nigeria. So, to think that we will occupy our current position is weird. But I personally believe, and I am confident we’ll escape the drop.”

Enyimba’s poor performance this season is capable of making her numerous fans develop apathy towards the club, but the dazzling winger has urged them to remain unflinching in their support of the 2-time African champions.

He said: “I also want to use this medium to urge fans of the People’s Elephant to please continue to give us their support.

“(I’m sure) by the end of the season, we’ll escape the drop zone.”

Enyimba will next face Wikki Tourists in a Matchday 33 encounter in Lafia on Saturday in search of valuable points in a bid to keep their topflight status.
