Enyimba share spoils with Al Masry in Uyo
Enyimba settled for a 1-1 draw against Al Masry in the penultimate Group D encounter of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup, to leave chances of advancing to the quarter-finals hanging by a thread.
The Egyptians took a surprise lead after just 8 minutes at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo when Mohamed Hashen headed home a corner.
Attempts by the People’s Elephant to get an equalizer in the first half proved abortive, with Joseph Atule and Ifeanyi Ihemekwele coming close.
But two minutes after the break, Stanley Eguma’s men were on level terms when Ihemekwele headed in Divine Ukadike’s cross from close range following a beautiful team work.
Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye was introduced just before the hour, but was only restricted to a couple of half chances as the Egyptians stood strong at the back.
The Egyptians could restored their lead but goalkeeper Henry Ozoemena saved Mahmoud Hamada’s 67th minute penalty to keep score at par.
Despite the draw, Enyimba moved up to 3rd in Group D with 5 points from 5 matches, and will face group winners Zamalek in Cairo on Sunday, 19 January.
A win for the 9-time Nigerian champions would ensure progress to the last 8, provided 2nd-placed Al Masry drop points at home against Black Bulls.
