Mbaoma ‘emotional’ after scoring against former side Remo Stars

Enyimba striker Victor Mbaoma says he felt ‘emotional’ after scoring against his former side Remo Stars on Wednesday in a Match Day 16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture in Aba.

The ex-Remo Stars captain scored the opener after 37 minutes for the People’s Elephant, who snapped a 4-game winless run, to beat Gbenga Ogunbote’s side 2-1.

Mbaoma, who did not celebrate his goal as a mark of respect for his former side, however, says he is delighted Enyimba returned to winning ways.

“Scoring against a team I once captained was so emotional for me,” the ex- Akwa United goal poacher told www.enyimbafc.net after the match. “Immediately I scored, I felt a great pain in my heart, just like a stab. Off course, I couldn’t celebrate.

“But it’s part of the game. I am an Enyimba player now so I must do my job without sentiments. It was difficult for me. But I couldn’t help it.

“I thank God for the grace he gave to me to score the goal. I appreciate it. I’m so happy, and it means a lot to my team because we needed the goal, we needed the victory, we needed the three points. And I’m so happy that we got it.”

Mbaoma, who has now scored 4 league goals for the 2-time African champions this season, added that the team will be working on consolidating on the win against Remo Stars in the subsequent games.

“We’ll keep pushing to get the best results in the upcoming games,” he added.

Enyimba, record 8-time champions of the NPFL, will next face struggling Dakkada FC in Uyo on Sunday in a Match Day 17 game.
