Ekwutoziam enjoying new role at Enyimba

In the final fixture of the 2021/22 NPFL season, Eze Ekwutoziam was surprisingly named to start the game against Plateau United in central midfield.

Surprisingly, Ekwutoziam exceeded all expectations to hold his ground in the role. He went on to play in the same position in the Aiteo Cup games against Ijebu United and Niger Tornadoes.

His performances in central midfield have left the inkling that the Enyimba gaffer would continue to use him in the role, despite arriving Enyimba as a wing forward. Interestingly, Ekwutoziam looks braced up for the challenge.

“When I was told that I would play in midfield, I didn’t feel any pressure,” the youthful Ekwutoziam recalled.

“In training all through that week, I was used in midfield and I think I did well, so when the real game came, I was not bothered. I just went to the field and did the simple things.

“It is a position I have played before at my former clubs. Sometimes I have been used behind the striker or in central midfield. I have played in different positions, even as a centre-forward. The only place on the field that I have not played is as a goalkeeper.”

Having now fully interpreted the central midfield role, Ekwutoziam outlined some of the qualities that make him admire the position.
