Nweke bemoans loss to Ikorodu City
Kalu Nweke has bemoaned Enyimba’s 0-1 defeat to table-toppers Ikorodu City in a Matchday 26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter in Aba on Sunday, adding it was ‘one of the worst games we have played this season’.
A well-taken goal by forward Joseph Arumala in the 39th minute was all the Oga Boys needed to condemn the People’s Elephant to their third home loss of the campaign and eleven overall.
In a game where Enyimba offered little in terms of creativity and offensive play, the visitors were largely dominant and resilient in defence.
The scoreline could have been wider if Arumala had converted a second half sitter, after earlier hitting the woodwork following a brilliant team move.
Speaking to Enyimbafc.net, Nweke was left disappointed with the performance of the record 9-time league champions.
“Actually, it’s not a good one for us,” he said. “Nobody is happy, and If I must tell myself and the players the truth, this is one of the worst games we have played this season. We couldn’t get it right from the start of the game till we conceded.
“After we conceded, we didn’t live up to expectations. Nobody is happy at all, honestly speaking.”
The defeat saw the 2-time African champions drop to 14th spot on the standings, with 31 points from 26 matches – just two points outside the dreaded relegation zone.
The poor position of his side notwithstanding, Nweke remains optimistic Enyimba will work harder to move up on the log.
“All hope is not lost. So, we’ll continue pushing till the end of the season and see where we’ll end,” the central midfielder stated. “We are just going to keep pushing.
“We know our position on the table is not good. So, we’ll keep pushing to make sure we climb up.”
Enyimba will next take a short trip to Port Harcourt on Sunday to face Rivers United in what is now a must-win match for Deji Ayeni’s side.
