Okereke revels after making Enyimba debut

Chisom Okereke feels fulfilled after overcoming a major injury setback to make his long-awaited debut for Enyimba.

The forward joined from Nasarawa United ahead of the current campaign and led the lines for the People’s Elephant in many preseason games.

But in a rather unfortunate twist, the forward fractured a bone in his foot free days to the start of the season, an injury that kept him out of the entire regular season.

He finally made his first showing in Enyimba’s 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance at the Championship Playoffs, coming in as substitute in the stalemate.

Speaking afterwards, Okereke described the joy of finally returning to action.

“It was very special for me because it’s a day I have been waiting for. I was very happy because I know what it means to go through a long injury. The pain, the loneliness and sometimes discouragements. These things are not easy to deal with.

“It was very difficult for me because I had big plans for the season. I wanted to score many goals and contribute a lot for the team. But the injury came and scattered everything. But in all, I remain grateful.

“I pushed myself a lot to be back, and when I was told that I would be listed on the bench, I knew something good was coming.

“When the coach told me to go on, all that was on my mind was to go help the team win the game. Unfortunately, that did not happen, but I’m glad to be back and will continue to do everything to ensure that we win something this season.”
