Enyimba exit AFL after defeat in Casablanca

Nigerian champions Enyimba exited the inaugural African Football League (AFL) following a 0-3 loss to Wydad Athletic Club in the quarter-final second leg fixture in Casablanca on Thursday night.

The result means the 2-time African champions, who lost 0-1 in the first leg in Uyo on Sunday, were eliminated 4-0 on aggregate.

Going to Casablanca, Enyimba had a tall mountain to climb after the first leg defeat at home, and were without defence stalwart Somiari Alalibo, who was sent off in Uyo towards the end of the encounter.

Buoyed by a vociferous and partisan home fans, first half goals from Ayoub El Amloud, Jamal Harkass and Yahya  Attiyat-Allah gave Wydad a commanding lead, and they held on to seal passage to the semi-finals despite a spirited second half showing by Enyimba.

Following their elimination from the money-spinning competition, the People’s Elephant are now guaranteed a $1m prize-money, while Wydad will pocket an assured $1.7m for reaching the last four.
