Enyimba open new campaign with trip to Benghazi
Enyimba are set to open their 2023/24 season with a CAF Champions League preliminary round fixture against Al Ahly Benghazi on Sunday evening
The Nigerian Champions square up against their Libyan opponents, a team also faced over two legs in the group stage of the 2020/21 CAF Confederation Cup.
The first eves2er meeting between sides saw the People’s Elephant triumph 2-1, with Austin Oladapo and Victor Mbaoma on the score sheet. The People’s Elephant would, however, lose 0-1 in the return fixture at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium.
Head coach, Finidi George has a 100% record in CAF competitions since assuming the helm in 2021. The People’s Elephant defeated Diambars FC 1-0 in Senegal in the Confederation Cup – in what was Finidi’s first game as Enyimba gaffer – before trouncing the Senegalese side 3-0 in the reverse fixture in Aba.
Finidi also led his charges to a 2-0 win over Al Ittihad Tripoli in Aba, but the team did not honour the return fixture, leading to Enyimba’s elimination from the competition.
Sunday’s fixture against Al Ahly Benghazi will kick off at 6 PM (7 PM Libyan time).
