Enyimba suffer 3-0 defeat in Setif
Enyimba Football Club failed to maintain top spot in their CAF Confederation Cup group after falling 3-0 to ES Setif with an uncharacteristic performance at the Stade du 8 Mai on Sunday.
The People’s Elephant were second best throughout and barely threatened their opponents whose high press seemed impossible to cope with.
After recording only a point in their opening three fixtures, Setif were faced with the gloomy prospect of early elimination, but Nabil Kouki’s side responded with a commanding performance to breathe life back into their qualification chances.
Amir Karaoui shot the Algerians into the lead right after the half-hour when Ahmed Kendouci’s long ball caught Enyimba flat and the midfielder fired into John Noble’s near post from a tight angle.
Enyimba responded with an attack of their own, Anayo Iwuala holding play to set Austin Oladapo whose effort was parried away by Soufiane Khedairia.
Amine Amoura doubled Setif’s lead in first half added time, tapping into an empty net after a percing run and delivery by Abderrahim Deghmoum to leave Enyimba with an uphill second half task.
Akram Djahnit increased the margin from the spot twenty minutes into the restart, sending his kick into the bottom right after Abiodun Adebayo’s infringment in the box.
Djahnit had the chance to make it a brace from the spot after Emmanuel Ampiah fouled Youcef Fellahi in the box, but Noble did better that time, parrying out the kick before reacting smartly to stop the rebound.
