Enyimba are set to begin their 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign against Gombe United on Sunday and Finidi George has no doubt that his team possess the fortitude to handle the pressure that comes with being defending champions.
The People’s Elephant were not in action when curtains were raised on the new season last weekend, but will take to the turf on Sunday to face Gombe United at the Gombe Stadium, Pantami.
Speaking with Enyimbafc.net ahead of the game, Finidi explained how his team will be able to handle the title defence.
“We are coming into the season as defending champions but we won’t allow that to put us under any pressure. We have already had discussions with the players and we have made them understand that one thing we must do is stick to our ideologies.
“This is a long season that will have the good moments and the difficult ones, but what ever the case, wet must stick to our ideologies. That is what will give us an identity and give us a chance.
“I understand that the fans have high expectations, but at the same time I am confident that the players we have can deliver. We are all motivated and ready to go at it again.”
Specifically on Sundays game against Gombe United, Finidi said:
“Gombe United have usually been a difficult opposition, especially when playing against them in Gombe. They have a good crowd of supporters behind them, and that makes them want to give everything. But we will also fancy our chances.
“We just want to maintain a positive approach because that is the same thing that helped us to win many away games last season. I am confident that with the right approach, we will be able to get a good result.”
