Match report: Akwa United 1-0 Enyimba
Charles Atshimene’s last minute penalty denied Enyimba a share of the points despite a worthy effort against Akwa United in Uyo on Sunday.
Atshimene converted from the spot after corner Enyimba captain Mfon Udoh was adjudged to have been tripped in the box.
The result left the People’s Elephant six points on the trail of Akwa United who lead the log with six rounds of matches left.
Fatai Osho deployed a 5-3-2 system that frustrated the hosts for the most part, often limiting them to half chances and attempts from distance. United, however, managed some real openings with Atshimene and Samson Gbadebo coming very close.
The hosts experienced close shave moments themselves as Reuben Bala shot wide from scoring range before having another effort cleared off by Olisa Ndah.
Imo Obot also missed a chance to put the visitors ahead before the game’s defining moment came at the death, substitute Mfon Udoh falling in the box for Atshimene to score the winner from twelve yards.
