Match report: Enyimba 0-0 Akwa United

Enyimba were held to a goalless draw by Akwa United at the Enyimba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The People’s Elephant were primed to add to their opening day win against Nasarawa United in Jos but were effectively shut out by Akwa United who recovered from a shocking home loss to Bendel Insurance to show grit and get a share of the points in Aba.

United looked impressive with their deep line possession style, but it was Chibuike Nwaiwu who was offered the chance to give Enyimba an early lead when he got on the end of Imo Obot’s cross at the far post, only to tap tamely and wide from close range.

The visitors maintained their patient build up from the back but almost got punished when Sadiq Abubakar pressed to gain possession and set up Chijioke Mbaoma who blasted hastily into the side netting.

Five minutes to the end of the first half, Enyimba survived by a hair’s breadth as James Ajako’s long range drive crashed against the bar.

Finidi George’s three changes at the interval switched the game into the hands of his team, but substitute Eze Ekwutoziam fluffed the biggest chance of a strong second half display, shooting wide from eight yards after a fine run and delivery from Imo Obot.

Kabiru Tijani and Moses Omoduemuke were also introduced in the latter stages, but their contribution changed little as the visitors remained resolute till the end.

    Good thing, we didn’t concede.

Let’s do better in our next game.

  2. Coach Finito has said it all, the only positive was not conceding any goal.
We have to work harder for the next games.
