“We want to keep improving”

Finidi George has harped on the need to focus on team improvement as Enyimba prepare for a return to the CAF Champions League.

The People’s Elephant will begin their 2023/24 season with a Champions League preliminary round tie against Libyan club, Al Ahli Benghazi.

With the first leg of the tie now less than a week away, Finidi believes that his side must continue to look out for ways to get stronger for the challenge ahead.

“It is very important that we get our priorities right,” the gaffer began.

“Right now, the priority has been to make our team stronger, both by tactical adjustments and squad improvement.

“Last season, we were able to reach our target, which was to qualify for the continent. In addition to that, we also won the league. But that does not mean that there are not areas that we need improvement.

“We have to realise that last season is gone and there is now the need to be ready for another season. That’s why my priority is to continue to see the team improve.

In preparation for Sunday’s game against Ahli Benghazi, the People’s Elephant have been involved in three practice matches – a 3-1 win against Akwa United, followed by a 0-1 loss to Bayelsa United a 1-1 draw against Rangers International – and Finidi has gleaned positives from those games.

“Generally, the team has looked good. I know they were not competitive games but they gave us really good tests. Those were the games we needed to prepare for our trip, and I’m happy that the players are showing good signs.”
