Winning against Bayelsa United is ‘fantastic’

Finidi George has described Enyimba’s 2-1 win against Bayelsa United in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 16 encounter in Yenagoa as ‘fantastic,’ adding it is ‘important to win’.

Substitute Ekene Awazie, who was making a return to the team from a long injury layoff, put the defending champions in front on 65 minutes, before forward Israel Consul leveled for the hosts 7 minutes later. However, Chijioke Mbaoma converted an 81st minute penalty to hand Enyimba their second away win of the season.

The win also moved the record NPFL champions up to 4th on the standings, with 26 points from 14 matches, just three points off leaders Remo Stars, with two games in hand.

Reacting to the win, the former Ajax and Real Betis winger said the result will boost the morale of his players going into the New Year.

“It’s important – it’s important to win,” the gaffer said. “We’ve lost some points at home (this season), so coming here to get the maximum three points, I think it’s fantastic.

“And at the end of the year, I think it is going to go well for the players.”
